CAMP SPEAK

Camp SPEAK is a unique overnight camp that offers a fun environment for children who use augmentative communication devices ages 5-18. Each child will be paired with a Speech Language Pathologist graduate student and experience 4 days of adapted activities under supervision of some of the best therapists in the State! While the kids are having a great time parents will have opportunities to connect, receive individual attention from venders, or attend in-services and training. Camp Speak is a collaborative effort involving organizations such as Atlanta Neurogenic Institute, Tools for Life, University of Georgia, and Georgia State. 

Mission statement

Camp Speak is an adapted overnight camp designed to support children and their families who use communication devices while providing speech language graduate students the opportunity to experience supporting students who use AAC. The Camp will provide attendees accessible sports, art, and fun in a language and literacy rich environment as well as provide educational workshops by venders and professionals to parents while they develop friendships and make connections with other families.

Students   Grad Students getting their Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology receive invaluable experience and supervision from some of the best therapist in the State.

Parents      Have opportunities to build friendships and receive education in order to better support their children’s use of their communication device. 

Education  Vendors and specialist will provide direct and group education throughout. 

Access     Camp Twin Lakes is fully accessible so everyone can participate in activities such as switch adapted archery or zip lining in a wheelchair. 

Kids           Children will receive a true camping experience while having fun, building friendships and learning to communicate.

Three-part purpose of the Camp

Participants will:

  1. Enhance communication and literacy in children who use communication devices. 

  2. Develop friendships with other individuals who use communication devices.

Parents will:

  1. Receive education and direct instruction in order to improve their ability to support their child’s unique communication and device needs.

  2. Develop friendships with other parents who also have children who use communication devices

Speech Language Graduate Students will:

  1. Receive hands on experience learning best practices in supporting children who use communication devices.

  2. Receive direct instruction in using a combination of low tech and high tech by professionals in order to teach children who use communication devices

Logistics

Camp Dates: Labor Day Weekend

Location: Camp Twin Lakes

Lodging: Families will have their own lodging

Covid Policy: All participants will be required to take a rapid test upon arrival. 

All Donations are Tax Deductible and directly fund this camp.
